Join Us for a Unique Printing Bike Experience at Broomhill Community Library
Nick Hand of The Letterpress Collective will visit Broomhill Community Library in Sheffield on Monday, 23 September 2024.
This special event is part of the Press On adventure, a campaign supporting and advocating against the closure of libraries across the country.
Nick’s journey will take him from library to library, printing unique bookmarks inspired by the words and images of writers and artists in support of public libraries.
During his visit to Sheffield, Nick Hand will create a unique bookmark design that reflects the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Peak District, paying homage to the legacy of conservationist Ethel Haythornthwaite.
Ethel Haythornthwaite, a pioneering figure in the conservation movement, played a crucial role in the establishment of the Peak District National Park. Her dedication to protect the natural environment has left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Visitors will have the opportunity to receive one of these exclusive bookmarks, printed on Nick’s bespoke bicycle, in exchange for a donation to the charity Ethel founded – CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire. The money raised will support the charity’s Centenary appeal, ensuring that Ethel Haythornthwaite’s vision to protect the natural beauty of the countryside continues to thrive.

The Press On Adventure
Press On is an adventure that will take the printing bike from library to library across Britain printing bookmarks along the way. Our libraries have faced enormous pressure and have survived largely due to local support. Nick’s journey aims to contribute to the incredible work these communities do by visiting as many libraries as possible, including those as far as Orkney. At each stop, he will produce a limited run of unique bookmarks, all printed in situ at the library.
About the Printing Bike
The printing bike, a bespoke creation by Robin Mather, is equipped with a letterpress Adana press, inks, type, and blocks – everything needed to print a small run at each stop.
Come and witness this unique blend of cycling, printing, and heritage. Support our libraries and take home a piece of this extraordinary journey!
