Centenary Tree Planting

Our Centenary tree planting initiative, is a simple yet powerful way to nurture nature, ensuring that our local landscapes remain vibrant and healthy for future generations.

To celebrate our Centenary milestone we will plant 100 trees in the beautiful moorlands that surround Sheffield – that’s one tree for every year we have worked to preserve and enhance the Peak District and South Yorkshire countryside.

Our Centenary Tree Planting programme is a heartfelt tribute to our founder Ethel Haythornthwaite – a prominent environmentalist in Sheffield and a trailblazer of the countryside movement nationally.

Like many of us, Ethel recognised the profound benefits of nature on well-being and campaigned to protect the moors, ensuring people living in the city could enjoy the benefits of a beautiful, thriving countryside.

She campaigned to protect the moors from plans to build houses over the ‘breathing spaces’ of Sheffield so that people living in the city could access the countryside and experience the benefits of a beautiful, thriving countryside.

In particular, Ethel often found solace on the eastern side of the National Park close to the Outdoor City, where she was born.

So, in collaboration with the Eastern Moors Partnership, we will plant trees and shrubs across the moorlands, on the outskirts of Sheffield.

By contributing to our Centenary Fund, you will not only honor Ethel’s remarkable legacy but also play a vital role in preserving the natural beauty of our countryside. Your support will enable projects like the Centenary Tree Planting Programme, ensuring that Ethel’s vision for a greener, more beautiful world continues to thrive for generations to come.

Donate to the Centenary Fund

For over 100 years we’ve worked to promote, enhance and protect the Peak District and South Yorkshire countryside.

We shall continue to do so for generations to come, but only if we can secure generous support from people who care about the Peak District and South Yorkshire countryside.

With your support, we can

  • Ensure everyone has access to the countryside and green spaces
  • Help the countryside and its communities to flourish
  • Empower communities to enhance and safeguard their local environment
  • Mitigate the impact of the climate emergency on our landscapes and wildlife

Together we can create a thriving, beautiful countryside for everyone to enjoy, for generations to come.
